Lancaster County uses its road centerlines to support, among other things, linear referencing and dynamic segmentation for the Planning Commission’s Transportation Division. The County integrates PennDOT network IDs directly into the local roads to facilitate mapping of the Planning Partner GIS data library released to Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPO’s). Lancaster County hired geographIT to review the County’s internal data maintenance procedures supporting the PennDOT data integration and update the editing protocols for the ArcGIS 9.3.1 environment. geographIT also provided three training sessions to educate staff about the data maintenance procedures, the associated edit tools, and the GIS-T analysis tools available through a custom GIS-T toolset geographIT developed for the County’s Planning Commission. The first training session was held in October 2009 and provided an introduction to linear referencing as well as outlined how to integrate PennDOT data into the local roads and bridges GIS data layers. The second round of classes was held in April 2010 where the linear referencing materials were once again presented to another group of users. Additionally, geographIT provided training and exercises for the custom GIS-T toolbar that allows the Transportation Division to map PennDOT data within the context of Lancaster County GIS mapping. All three courses included a custom course design, training slide presentation, and hands-on GIS exercises using Lancaster County’s data.
