geographIT’s (then ATS) role in the Atlanta Green Space Plan project was to provide GIS technical support services that included: Inventory, Mapping, Analysis, and Communication. Before assembling a comprehensive GIS spatial inventory, geographIT first worked with the client and consultant team to establish the analytical and graphic communication framework this inventory would support. Once basic database design parameters were formulated, data inventory was done, and the GIS foundation was built by accurately performing spatial and format transformations on data coming from a wide array of diverse sources. After the inventory and data mapping, our first action was to measure the spatial accessibility of green spaces (of various types and containing various facilities) to places where people live and work. We then integrated our spatial analysis with block group level census data and public input from surveys, focus groups, and meetings to refine green space preferences and concerns for different groups living in different parts of the city. This revealed spatial imbalances in the distribution of parkland and recreation facilities, which in turn led to the prioritization of areas where efforts to secure additional green spaces should be concentrated. At this point, the analytical focus shifted toward identifying targeted opportunities for new green spaces based on land ownership/value/use, tax status, access, connectivity potential, environmental features, etc.
